Smudger's short wheezy laugh from Thomas and Friends, a cheeky engine chuckle used for smug characters, silly fails and cartoon villain moments online.

This is Smudger's distinctive laugh from Thomas and Friends, a short burst of he he he chuckling that lasts about a second. The voice is high, wheezy and self satisfied, like a small engine who thinks he has gotten away with something naughty. It does not sound friendly or joyful, it sounds smug and a little bit mean, which is why it lands so well as a reaction. Played over a character's face it instantly makes them look cheeky, guilty or pleased with their own mischief.

Smudger is a narrow gauge engine in Thomas and Friends who was introduced as a cheeky, show off character that ignored advice and paid the price for it. His short laugh became easy to lift as a standalone clip because it is instantly recognisable without any dialogue around it. Online it sits alongside other cartoon reaction laughs like the Woody Woodpecker Laugh, used in edits, memes and soundboards when someone needs a quick smug chuckle rather than a full joke or line.
