The classic Pokémon RBY trainer encounter cue from the original Game Boy games, used to signal sudden danger, surprise battles, or getting caught.

This sound is the short alert that plays when a trainer spots you in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow. It starts with a sharp, rising chiptune sting that instantly feels tense and recognisable, even in just a few seconds. Because the cue means a battle is about to begin, it gives videos a quick sense of being noticed, interrupted, or thrown into trouble. Creators use it when someone gets called out, when an awkward moment begins, or when a harmless scene suddenly turns competitive.

This cue comes from the trainer encounter moments in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, often abbreviated as Pokémon RBY, on the Game Boy. The brief chiptune alert became memorable because players heard it every time an NPC trainer locked eyes with them before a battle. Online, it spread through gaming edits, reaction clips, and short memes as a shorthand for “you've been seen” or “trouble is starting.” It still works well because its retro sound is instantly readable, even to viewers who never played the originals.

What is the Pokémon Trainer Encounter sound?

It is the short chiptune alert from Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow that plays when an in-game trainer notices the player and starts a battle sequence. People use it online to mark sudden tension, being caught, or an incoming challenge.

Where is this sound from?

This clip comes from the original Pokémon Game Boy titles commonly called Pokémon RBY: Red, Blue, and Yellow. It is one of the most recognisable battle-prep cues in early Pokémon games because it plays right before trainer fights begin.

Why do people use this sound in memes and edits?

Creators use it because the meaning is immediate: someone has been spotted and something tense is about to happen. That makes it perfect for awkward eye contact, getting exposed, surprise confrontations, or any moment that needs a quick retro-game warning.
