A sharp vinyl record scratch sound effect used for freeze-frame moments, awkward pauses and comedic interruptions in memes and short videos.

This is the classic record scratch, a sudden, grating scrape that sounds like a needle being dragged abruptly across vinyl, cutting off whatever was playing in an instant. It lasts less than a second, but its abruptness makes it impossible to ignore, instantly freezing the action and signalling that something has gone wrong, been misunderstood, or just turned awkward. In videos it works like a punchline in reverse, stopping the joke before it lands and letting the silence that follows do the work. Viewers recognise it immediately, which is why it can turn an ordinary clip into a moment of comic timing without a single word being spoken.

The record scratch began as a DJ technique, with turntablists in hip-hop manually moving a vinyl record back and forth under the needle to create a rhythmic, percussive scrape. Film and television later borrowed the sound as shorthand for a sudden stop, most famously for freeze-frame narration where a character pauses the story to explain how they ended up there. That association stuck, and online creators adopted the same short clip for memes, reaction videos and short-form edits, where a single scratch can signal embarrassment, a plot twist or a joke falling flat.

What is the Zoeira record scratch sound?

It is a short, sharp vinyl scratch, lasting under a second, that sounds like a needle dragged abruptly across a record. Creators use it to stop music or dialogue suddenly and mark an awkward, funny or unexpected moment.

Where does the record scratch sound come from?

It comes from DJ turntablism, where DJs moved vinyl back and forth under a needle to make a percussive scrape. Film and television later popularised it as the sound of a story freezing for narration.

How do creators use this sound in videos?

They place it at the exact moment a scene should stop, such as an embarrassing reveal or a failed plan, then pause briefly before a reaction shot. It works best on its own, without music or effects layered over it.
