Windows startup sound boosted to 300 percent volume, an ear-splitting earrape version used for jump scare pranks, memes and loud reaction edits.

This is the familiar Windows startup chime pushed far beyond normal volume, boosted to an ear-splitting 300 percent. The clean, nostalgic boot-up melody becomes harsh, distorted and overwhelming, clipping as it blasts through speakers or headphones. Instead of a calm system welcome, it lands like a sudden alarm, making listeners flinch, laugh or scramble for the volume control. The joke relies entirely on excess, taking one of the most recognisable computer sounds and turning its friendly tone into a painful, absurd punchline that lasts only a few seconds but feels much louder.

The sound comes from the Windows operating system startup chime, a short melody millions of computer users know from booting up a PC. Online, creators began making earrape edits by raising familiar clips to extreme volume, often labelled 300 percent, and sharing them as joke sounds alongside the Windows error sound and other distorted system noises. This version keeps the recognisable melody intact but distorts it through sheer loudness, and it remains popular because a routine, harmless system sound instantly becomes a prank no Windows user needs explained.

What is the Windows startup 300% sound?

It is the Windows startup chime edited to play at an extreme 300 percent volume. The melody stays recognisable, but the boost adds distortion and clipping, turning a calm boot-up sound into a loud earrape joke clip.

Why is it called minus ears?

Minus ears is a joke translation of the Russian title, meaning the volume is so high it will cost you your ears. It warns listeners that the boosted startup sound is painfully loud, especially through headphones at full volume.

How do creators use this sound?

Creators drop it after a quiet setup, a fake computer boot screen or a tech mistake to startle viewers for comic effect. It works best as a single short hit, not looped, because the surprise and distortion carry the joke.
