The 'Tis but a scratch' sound is the Black Knight's defiant line from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, used in memes to shrug off obvious damage or failure.

This clip captures the Black Knight refusing to acknowledge a devastating injury during his absurd duel with King Arthur. His calm insistence that it is only a scratch clashes perfectly with the obvious severity of the situation. The dry delivery, escalating argument, and stubborn confidence turn defeat into comedy. Online, the sound gives videos an instantly recognizable way to mock someone who downplays a painful accident, major mistake, broken object, or overwhelming loss. Its humor comes from the gap between what viewers can plainly see and what the speaker is willing to admit.

The line comes from the 1975 comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. John Cleese plays the Black Knight, who continues challenging King Arthur, played by Graham Chapman, even after losing limbs in their duel. His refusal to accept defeat produced several enduring quotations, with “’Tis but a scratch” becoming shorthand for absurd understatement. The scene later circulated through image macros, reaction videos, gaming edits, and social posts because the quote remains easy to match with visible failure, damage, or misplaced confidence.
