The opening of Thin Lizzy's Boys Are Back in Town, used as a hype anthem for rugby highlights, team entrances and comeback edits on social media.

This clip captures the instantly recognisable opening of Thin Lizzy's classic rock anthem, with its twin guitar riff, driving drums and confident vocal hook announcing that the boys are back in town. It sounds warm, loud and celebratory, like a stadium singalong built for a big entrance rather than background music. Played over a rugby try, a team walkout or a reunion clip, it instantly lifts the mood, signalling swagger, togetherness and a return to form. Listeners recognise it within seconds, even without the lyrics, because the riff alone carries decades of pub, radio and sports-bar familiarity.

Thin Lizzy, the Irish rock band fronted by Phil Lynott, released Boys Are Back in Town in 1976 on their album Jailbreak, and it quickly became their signature song and a classic rock radio staple. Its singalong chorus and twin guitar sound helped it outlast its era, moving from pubs and radio into stadium playlists, crowd cheering moments and sports broadcasts. On social media, short clips are now reused as shorthand for a group returning, a team arriving together or a comeback, keeping the song familiar to listeners who may never have heard the full track.

It is the opening of Boys Are Back in Town by Irish rock band Thin Lizzy, released in 1976 on the album Jailbreak. The clip uses its famous twin guitar riff and chorus hook.

Why is it used for rugby videos?

Rugby creators use it because the lyrics and triumphant sound suit team entrances, tries and reunions. It signals a group returning together with confidence, making it a natural hype track for match highlights.

Place it at the moment of entrance, a try or a reunion, cut on the guitar riff and keep the clip short. Pair it with crowd noise or match footage rather than looping it, so the entrance impact stays strong.
