The PlayStation 2 startup sound is a deep, atmospheric console boot effect used in gaming edits, nostalgia videos, memes, and videos about classic PS2 games.

This sound is the distinctive PlayStation 2 startup sequence heard when the console boots. It begins with a low, resonant tone and spacious electronic textures, creating a mysterious, futuristic atmosphere before the system reaches its menu. For many listeners, the effect immediately evokes childhood gaming, late-night sessions, and the early-2000s console era. Its slow, dramatic character also makes it useful as a reveal, transition, or nostalgic punchline in short videos. The clip is recognizable even without the PlayStation 2 logo appearing on screen.

The sound comes from the PlayStation 2 startup experience, associated with Sony’s second home console and its early-2000s gaming era. The console launched in Japan in 2000 and became one of the most widely recognized gaming systems of its generation. Online creators continue using the boot sequence in reaction clips, gaming retrospectives, parody openings, and nostalgia edits because its dark, spacious tone is instantly identifiable. It often signals that a video is shifting into a retro gaming reference without needing spoken explanation.
