이 사운드에 대하여

A melancholy clip from Gary Jules' cover of Mad World, heard in Donnie Darko and often used for sad memes, reflective edits, and bleak punchlines.

This clip features Gary Jules' subdued cover of Mad World, delivered with soft piano and a restrained, intimate vocal. Its slow pace and weary tone create an immediate sense of loneliness, reflection, and emotional distance. In videos, the excerpt can turn an ordinary setback into a bleakly comic moment or give a serious montage a mournful atmosphere. Because the performance is quiet rather than dramatic, it works especially well when the viewer needs a few seconds to absorb an awkward outcome, disappointing reveal, or unexpectedly somber scene.

Mad World was written by Roland Orzabal and first released by Tears for Fears in 1982. Gary Jules later recorded a slower cover with Michael Andrews for the 2001 film Donnie Darko. The version became a major hit after its 2003 UK release, including reaching Christmas number one. Online, its sparse arrangement became shorthand for sadness, isolation, and exaggerated despair. It remains useful in edits because viewers quickly recognize its mournful mood, much like the meme use of Hello darkness my old friend.
