Classic 1972 Godzilla roar sound effect from the Toho kaiju films, used for monster reveals, epic entrances and dramatic meme moments in edits.

This is the deep, guttural roar of Godzilla as heard in the early 1970s Toho films, a layered growl that rises into a harsh, reverberating screech. It starts low and rumbling, then tears upward with a metallic edge that feels both animal and mechanical. At just over ten seconds it has room to build, echo and fade, giving any scene instant scale. Viewers recognize it immediately as a warning that something massive has arrived, which is why it works for comedy reveals as well as genuine monster moments.

Godzilla debuted in Toho's 1954 film, and composer Akira Ifukube created the iconic roar by rubbing a resin coated glove along contrabass strings and varying the playback speed. That distinctive sound was reused and remixed across the Showa era films, including the early 1970s entries around 1972. As kaiju clips spread through trailers, compilations and meme edits online, this longer roar became a go to shorthand for an unstoppable giant monster, instantly signalling power, danger and nostalgia for classic Japanese cinema.

It is a ten second recording of Godzilla's classic Showa era roar, a deep rumble that builds into a loud, echoing screech. This version is associated with the Toho kaiju films of the early 1970s.

The original roar was created by composer Akira Ifukube for the 1954 Godzilla film by rubbing a resin coated glove on contrabass strings. Toho reused variations of that recording across later films, including the 1970s sequels.

How do people use the Godzilla roar in videos?

Creators place it under monster reveals, oversized pets, boss entrances and angry entrances for comic effect. Because the roar is long and builds slowly, it works best when the visual appears just as the sound peaks.
