AVGN's rolling rock clip features his exasperated reaction to a rolling boulder in a retro game review, widely used in memes for moments of sudden danger.

This clip comes from the Angry Video Game Nerd, with James Rolfe reacting in real time as a huge rock rolls toward his character during a notoriously awkward NES segment. His voice rises from disbelief to shouting as the boulder keeps coming, turning a simple platforming hazard into a moment of pure frustration. The pacing is frantic and repetitive, which makes the panic feel both genuine and funny. For viewers who know the show, it instantly signals a game that is unfair, badly designed, or about to go wrong, and that shared recognition is what gives the short audio its punch in edits and reaction videos.

The sound comes from the Angry Video Game Nerd, the long-running review series created by James Rolfe, where he plays notoriously difficult and poorly designed retro games. Short reaction clips from the show became staples on soundboards because his frustrated delivery is instantly recognisable to retro gaming fans. The rolling rock moment in particular spread through meme edits and gameplay videos, where it works as shorthand for an unfair obstacle. It remains popular because it pairs a familiar voice with a simple visual gag that needs no explanation.
