A short urgh grunt sound effect of disgust and frustration, often used as a quick reaction in memes, edits, gaming clips and funny videos online.

Urgh is a brief, guttural grunt that instantly signals disgust, annoyance or exhausted disbelief. The sound drags out a low, throaty 'urgh' with a strained, fed-up tone, lasting just over a second and a half but carrying a lot of attitude. There is no music or extra noise, just the raw vocal reaction landing on its own. Viewers read it immediately as the moment something goes wrong, smells bad or feels too much to handle, which makes the clip land as comedy rather than genuine anger and keeps the mood light and exaggerated.

The exact origin of this urgh recording is unknown, so its history is really about how editors adopted it online. Short grunt reactions spread through soundboards, meme edits and short-form video because they say disgust or frustration faster than any caption could. This 1.6-second clip became a reusable punchline, shared for reaction videos, gaming highlights and comedic skits where a character needs an instant fed-up response. Its appeal is simplicity: one strained sound, understood in any language, that can be dropped into almost any awkward or gross moment.

What is the urgh sound effect?

Urgh is a short human grunt expressing disgust, annoyance or exhausted frustration. The low, throaty vocal sound lasts about 1.6 seconds and works as an instant reaction, letting viewers know a character is fed up without needing any dialogue or explanation.

When should you use the urgh sound?

Use it at the exact moment something gross, annoying or embarrassing happens in your edit. It works best for reaction shots, gaming fails, bad smells and awkward reveals, placed cleanly over the visual so the grunt becomes the punchline of the scene.

Is the urgh sound a word or a grunt?

It is more of a grunt than a proper word, made as a strained vocal reaction rather than spoken dialogue. That is why it translates so easily across edits and languages, since the tone alone communicates disgust and frustration clearly.
