A long, unhinged burst of laughter called Smiech, used in meme edits and reaction videos to underline a creepy moment of madness or dark humour.

Smiech is a long, rolling laugh that starts out amused and quickly slides into something wilder and more unhinged, with sharp breaths, rising pitch and bursts that sound almost out of control. Lasting around fifteen seconds, it gives an editor enough room to let a reaction build rather than just punctuating a single beat. Played over a face, a failed plan or a character losing their composure, it makes the moment feel manic and slightly unsettling, as if the joke has gone further than anyone expected. The humour comes from that escalation, the sense that the laughter itself has taken over and will not stop.

The clip circulates under the Polish word Smiech, meaning laughter, and its accompanying label points to madness, which neatly captures why creators reach for it. Rather than belonging to a single famous scene, it has spread as a reusable reaction sound in meme edits, gaming clips and short-form videos, where a long, escalating laugh can sell a character losing control. Its staying power comes from that flexibility: the same burst can read as playful, mocking or genuinely unhinged depending on the face or moment placed underneath it.

What is the Smiech sound?

Smiech is a roughly fifteen-second burst of escalating, unhinged laughter, titled with the Polish word for laughter. It is used as a reaction sound in memes and edits when someone loses control, mocks a situation, or takes a joke too far.

Where does Smiech come from?

Its exact original source is not clearly documented, so it is best treated as a circulating meme sound rather than a clip from a named film or show. It is known online under its Polish title, with a file label that translates to madness.

How should creators use the Smiech sound?

Place it immediately after a reveal, failure or twist, letting the laugh answer the moment, and keep it clear of dialogue so its breathy peaks stay audible. A slow zoom or a reaction face helps sell the escalation without needing extra effects.
