The famous Maria Sharapova tennis grunt sound effect from her matches, a loud shriek on every shot used for sports edits and funny reaction clips.

This is the unmistakable on-court grunt of Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova, a sharp, high-pitched shriek timed to the moment she strikes the ball. Recorded across her long Grand Slam career, the sound builds in intensity during rallies and became as famous as her powerful groundstrokes. It is instantly recognisable even without video, carrying the effort, focus and drama of a big point. Viewers hear it as both impressive and slightly comic, which is why the clip works so well removed from a real match and dropped into unrelated scenes for exaggerated effort.

Maria Sharapova, the Russian former world number one who won Wimbledon in 2004 at seventeen, became one of tennis's most talked about grunters during her 2001 to 2020 career. Her shrieks were measured at over 100 decibels at some tournaments and sparked years of debate about grunting in the sport. Clips of rallies circulated widely on video platforms and sports shows, turning the sound into shorthand for maximum effort. It remains a go-to sports meme because almost any viewer recognises it instantly.
