The gwa gwa sound is a short, squeaky cat vocalisation repeated twice, used in memes and edits for cute, confused or silly pet reactions online.

Gwa gwa is a tiny loop of a cat making two high, rounded noises that sound almost like speech. The pitch rises and falls quickly, giving it a surprised, babbling quality rather than a normal meow. At just over a second long it lands instantly, which is why editors cut to it right on a pet's blank stare or open mouth. The effect is pure comic confusion, turning an ordinary cat clip into a reaction moment that feels both cute and slightly bewildered, with the second gwa acting as the punchline.

Little is known about the original recording behind gwa gwa, but the clip spread online as a short cat reaction sound shared across soundboards and social edits. Its name comes from transcribing the two syllabic noises phonetically, and searches for gwagwa cat and gwa gwa gwa helped the spelling stick. Creators keep reusing it because the sound is instantly readable without context, works muted as a caption as well as heard aloud, and fits the endless cycle of cute pet videos remixed for comic effect.

What is the gwa gwa sound?

It is a very short clip of a cat making two high, rounded vocal noises that sound like the syllables gwa gwa. It is not a normal meow, which is why editors use it as a cute, confused reaction sound.

Where does gwa gwa come from?

The original recording and cat have not been clearly identified, so most people know it simply as an online cat meme sound. It spread through shares, reposts and soundboard uploads under the phonetic name gwa gwa.

How do creators use gwa gwa?

Creators place it over a pet's open mouth, blank stare or sudden head turn so the animal looks like it is babbling. It works best unlooped and timed tightly, as a one-second punchline in TikTok, Shorts and meme edits.
