A 15 second clip of the opening guitar riff from Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit, used in edits, memes and reaction videos for instant grunge energy.

It is a short excerpt centred on the distorted guitar riff and driving drums that open Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. The sound builds quickly from a clean strum into a loud, crunchy chorus of power chords, with a raw and restless feel. Listeners recognise it within seconds because the riff is simple, repetitive and instantly energetic. Played over a dull moment, it makes the scene feel rebellious and chaotic, as if something is about to kick off. The contrast between quiet and loud gives editors a natural punch in point.

Smells Like Teen Spirit was released by Nirvana in 1991 as the lead single from the album Nevermind. Written by Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, the song became the defining anthem of grunge and helped bring alternative rock into the mainstream. Its opening riff remains one of the most recognised in rock music and is widely sampled in edits, parodies and short clips online. Short excerpts circulate on soundboards because the quiet to loud shift works instantly, even without the full song or vocals.
