A crowd gasping and shouting ahhhh in unison, the classic audience reaction sound used in memes and videos for shock, excitement or a dramatic reveal.

This is a short burst of a live audience reacting together, a collective ahhhh that rises quickly and then holds for a couple of seconds before fading. It sounds like dozens of people in a studio or theatre gasping at the same moment, with overlapping voices creating a swelling, surprised tone rather than a single scream. Played over a clip, it instantly signals that something shocking, impressive or unexpectedly funny has just happened, making the viewer feel like they are part of a crowd witnessing it live.

This kind of audience gasp has become a staple of online editing because it is instantly recognisable, even without any visual context. Creators on short-form video platforms use it as a shorthand for collective surprise, borrowing the feeling of a live studio audience to make a solo clip feel bigger and more shared. It works especially well in reaction videos, pranks and reveal edits, where the sound alone tells viewers how they are supposed to feel. Its short length also makes it easy to drop into memes without disrupting the pacing.
