Über diesen Sound

The familiar Saturday Night Live closing theme, heard over the end credits, adds a warm, reflective sign-off to finales, recaps, and comedy edits.

This clip captures the gentle closing music associated with Saturday Night Live’s end credits. Its relaxed saxophone-led melody and unhurried rhythm create a warm, slightly sentimental mood after the energy of a comedy performance. The sound works as an affectionate farewell, but it can also add humorous finality when placed after an awkward moment, failed stunt, or chaotic sequence. Because the melody feels polished and familiar, viewers immediately recognize that the action is over and the imaginary credits are ready to roll.

Saturday Night Live premiered on NBC in 1975, with composer Howard Shore serving as its original music director. The program’s closing music is commonly known as “A Waltz in A” and has accompanied the cast’s onstage goodnights and end credits in various arrangements. Decades of weekly broadcasts made its mellow melody shorthand for the end of a comedy show. Online creators continue using it to frame mock finales, sentimental recaps, and deliberately overproduced endings to ordinary moments.
